 Upper and Middle School News

  • U/S Host Families Needed
A group of six Japanese students will be visiting the DCDS Upper School next month, and host families are needed. The group will consist of 3 girls and 3 boys, all high students who are presently studying English at Kousen High School, DCDS’ sister school in Kusatsu, Japan. The group will be at DCDS from October 26 – November 5, during which time they will attend classes at the U/S and visit the surrounding Detroit area. Host families are asked to share their everyday lives with these students, thus allowing them the opportunity to experience American culture first-hand. In return, the host families will enrich their own lives by learning about the Japanese culture and by making an everlasting friendship. If you are interested and would like more information, please contact Jacquelin Riley, U/S teacher and Director of DCDS Global, at 248.430.2732 or jriley@dcds.edu.

Picture of the Week.
It's a tie between two Instagram pictures! The first picture of the week is reminiscent of J.K. Rowlings' Sorcerer's Stone in which first years all attend a sorting ceremony where they find out into which house they will be initiated. For DCDS third graders, they anxiously wait to see which Headmaster House they will become part of - Shaw (Green - Responsibility), Snelling (Red - Empathy), Schlegel (Blue - Integrity), Hansen (Yellow - Loyalty), or Shilling (Orange - Respect).

The second picture is from one of our Middle School advisory groups. During the first week, there is a lot of bonding time in the advisory. Each advisor involves the kids in different activities to get them interacting and more comfortable with a core peer group they will spend time with this year.

Blog: Mrs. Matthews' Moose-eum Experience
The summer is a great time for our faculty to experience unique professional development opportunities. Our Lower School science teacher, Mrs. Matthews, shares some unusual experiences with moose in Isle Royale National Park in Houghton, MI. See the blog post.
